DS8000 SFI
For the DS8000, the SFI concept is necessary because a DS8000 can be ordered as a model
9A2 or 9B2. In these models all resources in the DS8000 are divided between two separate
machine images. This means that to all attached hosts, a single DS8000 Storage Unit
effectively contains two DS8000s. It is like having two separate machines in one physical box.
This means that when using the DS GUI or the DS CLI, you have to be very clear whether
you are working with the SFI or with the Storage Unit. For most operations you always work
with an SFI. You can tell the difference very easily. The serial number of the Storage Unit
always ends in zero. The serial number of the first SFI always ends in 1. If you have ordered
a model 2107-9A2 or 2107-9B2, then you will also have a second SFI. The serial number of
the second SFI always ends in 2.
DS8000 Model 921 and 922 SFI example
In Example 2-2, we used the DS CLI to connect to a DS8000 Management Console. We
issued the lssu command to display the DS8000 Storage Unit of a 2107-922. We then issued
the lssi command to display the DS8000 Storage Image on that Storage Unit. The Storage
Unit serial number is 7520780. The SFI serial number is 7520781. Note how the Storage Unit
and the SFI have different WWNNs.

DS8000 Model 9A2 SFI example
In Example 2-3, we used the DS CLI to connect to a DS8000 Management Console. We
issued the lssu command to display the DS8000 Storage Unit of a 2107-9A2. We then issued
the lssi command to display the DS8000 Storage Images for that Storage Unit. The Storage
Unit serial number is 7520780. The SFI serial numbers are 7520781 and 7520782. The
Storage Unit and the SFIs all have different WWNNs.
