Chapter 6. Symptom-to-FRU index
Use this index to aid in locating failing or failed components in the HS40 Type 8839
blade server.
Notes:
1. Check the configuration before you replace a FRU. Configuration problems can
2. For IBM devices not supported by this index, refer to the manual for that device.
3. Always start with "Checkout procedure" on page 21.
The symptom-to-FRU index lists symptoms, errors, and the possible causes of
common failures. The most likely cause is listed first. Use this symptom-to-FRU
index to help you decide which FRUs to have available when servicing the server.
The left column of the tables in this index lists error codes or messages, and the
right column lists one or more suggested actions or FRUs to replace.
Note: In tables with more than two columns, multiple columns are required to
Take the action (or replace the FRU) suggested first in the list of the right column,
then restart the server to see if the problem has been corrected before taking
further action.
Note: Reseat a suspected component or reconnect a cable before replacing the
POST error codes and messages are displayed on the screen and in the
management-module error log.
Beep codes
Beep symptoms are short tones or a series of short tones separated by pauses that
indicate system-error conditions. Both the system BIOS and the baseboard
management controller (BMC) emit beep codes (see the following two sections).
BIOS-generated beep codes
The following table lists the POST error beep codes. Typically, prior to system video
initialization, the BIOS uses these beep codes to inform users of error conditions.
Note: See Chapter 7, "Parts listing, Type 8839," on page 105 to determine which components should be replaced by
a field service technician.
