Administrator's Guide
To connect to the printer:
1. From the Print to pop-up menu, select Other from the bottom of the list.
Click on the OK button. The Print Destinations dialog box is displayed.
2. Select AppleTalk printing devices, and click on the OK button. You are
notified that Windows NT is searching for AppleTalk printers.
The Available AppleTalk Printing Devices window is displayed. For each
zone found, the window displays a zone icon with the zone name beside
it.
If no zones are found, the message "No zones were detected on the
network. Searching for AppleTalk printing devices in the default zone" is
displayed. The window displays a zone icon with no name beside it to
represent the default zone and lists the network printers beneath the icon.
• If the network has no zones, go to step 3.
• If the network has zones, double-click on the zone containing the
printer. This displays a list of printers in the zone.
3. The IBM Network Color Printer appears in the list once for each of its
available queues. If all the queues are enabled and the default name
"IBMnetcolor" is still the name, the printer appears in the list as:
IBMnetcolor_Direct
IBMnetcolor_Hold
IBMnetcolor_Print
Choose one. Direct and Print are the recommended choices. If you
choose Direct, the jobs will be stored on and spooled from the NT server.
If you choose Print, the jobs will be moved from the NT server to the
printer's hard disk and will be stored and spooled from there.
A dialog box appears, asking if you want to capture this device.
4. For most network environments, capturing the printer is not the right
choice. Capturing the printer makes it invisible to all the other AppleTalk
users out on the network. Choose Yes only if you want to force users to
print through the NT server.
5. In the printer dialog box, check the box to share the printer on the
network.
The printer name is the default Share Name that Windows NT clients will
see. Change this name if you wish.
6. Click on the OK button. A new document log window is displayed, with
columns for Status, Doc Name, Owner, Printed At, Pages, Size, and
Priority.
Client workstations on the network print to the printer by connecting to the
printer Print queue on the Windows NT server. They do not have to use
AppleTalk Services. For instructions on attaching a network client to the
NT print queue, see the section on that client operating system in the
User's Guide .
