Administrator's Guide
To create print servers and print queues:
Create and configure new NetWare print servers and print queues using
NetWare Print Console, a NetWare utility that is stored in NetWare's PUBLIC
directory. The following steps apply to NetWare version 4.1. For complete
instructions and instructions that apply to your version of NetWare, see the
documentation that came with NetWare.
1. Decide on the names of new print servers and queues you intend to
create on the file server. These names (or the equivalent ID which
NetWare assigns) are used for communications between the printer and
the NetWare file server. Use the guidelines given here for selecting
names.
• For print servers, use names such as IPX_SERV or COLOR_serv.
• For queues, use names such as BIGq, littleq, and 5pmQ.
• Names should be as brief and descriptive as possible. Names cannot
begin with a period and cannot include spaces or any punctuation
characters other than periods. For example, the print server names
IPX_SERV and COLOR_SERV are both appropriate names, while
IPX SERVER and COLOR:SERV are not.
• When you configure the printer, you will use the printer to log on to
your NetWare file server and print server. You will need login names
and any file server login password and print server passwords.
2. Log in to the Novell NetWare server as the Supervisor.
3. At the NetWare MS-DOS prompt, type PCONSOLE. The Available
Options menu is displayed.
4. Choose Change Current File Server.
5. Select the name of the file server on which you would like to create the
new print server. Note the login name, the name of the file server, and the
name of the print server. Later, when you configure the printer, you will
select this file server as part of the Network Setup menu configuration.
6. From the Available Options menu, choose Print Server Information.
7. Press the Insert key and type a name for the new print server, such as
IPX_SERV, and press the Enter key. Then press the ESC key. Note the
login name, the name of the file server, and the name of the print server.
Later, when you configure the printer, you will select this print server as
part of the Network Setup menu configuration.
8. From the Available Options menu, choose Print Queue Information.
9. Press the Insert key and type a name for the new print queue. Press the
Enter key. The print queue name you entered will be highlighted in the
Print Queues list.
10. Make sure the name of the print queue you created is selected in the Print
Queues list, and press the Enter key. The Print Queue Information menu
is displayed.
11. In the Print Queue Information menu, choose Queue Servers and press
the Enter key. A blank Queue Servers list is displayed.
